George Benger - Blackheath Tennis Club Legend

George Banger in his garden, 18-3-16

RIP - George Benger - died 29-8-16 - a few months after this article was written.

George Benger has been a member of Blackheath tennis club for many years, filling the role of President and Vice President during that time. Long term members of the club will know that for nearly thirty years, George has been very involved in the day to day management of the club. On hundreds of occasions, I've driven past the courts on non-tennis days and have seen George mowing the lawns, repairing nets, sweeping the courts and performing other general repairs. I can't recall anyone doing as much work for our club as George has in my nineteen years as a member.

These days, George isn't far off ninety years of age and can still produce a forehand winner or a sneaky serve down the middle for an ace - with that familiar laugh and a cheeky smile. The tennis club and indeed the Blackheath community appreciates you George and we just wanted to say thank you for your decades of tireless work.

There have been plenty of hard working members in our clubs history, including George's wife Kay, who also needs to be thanked for her many years of faithful service. We appreciate you, Kay. Bill Hume, our current president, has also been a long term member and has contributed a lot to the club over many years. For everyone that has been involved in the club since its inception, we thank you all for your efforts in making this club what it is today.

NB: Situated at the southern end of Blackheath Oval, in Clanwilliam Street, Blackheath Tennis Club holds mixed social tennis days on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from approximately 9am to midday - with a slightly earlier start in summer. The general level is beginner to intermediate and we like to encourage social doubles and mixed doubles in a friendly environment where the score/result is less important than the exercise and fun. The courts can also be booked privately and for more competitive matches etc, outside of the social tennis times.
